- THE HABIT OF TRANSLATING ACROSS SIGN SYSTEMS TO GET AT MEANING: THAT IS OF TURNING A DRAWING INTO WRITING, WRITING INTO MUSIC, MUSIC INTO MATHEMATICS.
- THE HABIT OF SELF-REFLECTION AND SELF-ASSESSMENT.
NEW STANDARDS FOR TEACHERS
- A SOCRATIC, ADDUCTIVE APPROACH: THIS APPROACH IS AUTOMATICALLY STUDENT-CENTERED, ALLOWING THE CHILD TO SPEAK FIRST, SHOWING WHAT HE/SHE KNOWS
- A WORKSHOP CENTERED APPROACH, WHETHER TEACHING READING, WRITING, MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE, MUSIC; THIS APPROACH IS AUTOMATICALLY STUDENT-CENTERED, ALLOWING THE CHILD TO EXPERIMENT WITH THE CONTENT VIA DIRECT EXPERIENCE, INCLUDING MARK-MAKING SYSTEMS: i.e. WRITING, DRAWING, USING MATHEMATICAL NOTATION, USING MUSICAL NOTATION.
- A WILLINGNESS TO EXPERIMENT WITH MORE THAN ONE SIGN SYSTEM IN THE CLASSROOM; TO ALLOW STUDENTS TO DRAW, WRITE, CALCULATE NUMERICALLY AND ALGEBRAICALLY, COMPOSE MUSICALLY THEIR ANSWERS AND QUESTIONS ABOUT MEANING IN ANY CONTENT AREA.
- PROVISIONS FOR STUDENTS TO BE SELF-REFLECTIVE, INCLUDING SELF-ASSESSMENT.
